This guide walks you through how to upload a file or image, ask focused questions, and iterate on le Chatโs answers.
๐ Image and file uploads are available by default for all plans. No setup required. Limits apply.
1. Attach a file or image
Two ways to upload: drag and drop or click the +
button.
Drag and drop
The easiest way is to drag and drop your files directly into le Chatโs interface. A message saying Drop your files here...
appears when you hover over the chat input area.
Attach files manually
You can also click the +
button in the chat toolbar then select your files from your device.
๐ Quick question: Which formats do you support?
๐ Quick question: Which formats do you support?
Hereโs what le Chat can analyze, including images and files:
PDF (.pdf)
Word (.docx)
PowerPoint (.pptx)
CSV (.csv)
Text (.txt)
Markdown (.md)
Excel (.xlsx)
Code files (specifically but not limited to .html .css .js .php or .py)โ
JPEG
PNG
GIF
WEBPโ
Attach a file with +
, then ask your question
๐ก Tips for better results:
You can upload one or multiple items at once.
Use descriptive filenames for easier reference in follow-ups.
2. Ask a precise question
Now that your file is uploaded, you can ask le Chat to analyze it.
Tell le Chat exactly what you need. A clear prompt saves time and reduces follow-ups.
Some examples:
Summarize this PDF for a product manager. Focus on security implications and action items.
Extract all tables from this PDF and return them as CSV-ready text.
From this image, list every visible UI element and any error messages.
Extract the text from this image and return it as a clean, line-broken text.
๐ Prefer verbs that imply an outcome: summarize, extract, compare, explain, highlight, list, convert. For more tips on writing prompts, see our Prompt engineering basics article ๐.
le Chat analyzes the PDF and answers your question
๐ Quick question: Do you use my uploads for training?

Depending on your plan, uploaded data may be used to improve models. You can opt out of this program at any time, even if youโre on a free plan.
3. Iterate with follow-up questions
Need to go deeper? Keep the conversation going. Le Chat remembers the attached items.
Ask, for example:
Now **highlight the top 5 risks** and suggest mitigations.
**Quote** the paragraph that supports that claim.
**Compare** slide 3 and slide 7 and list differences.
**Translate** the summary to French.
๐ Reference files or pages explicitly when helpful: โIn AnnualReport_2024.pdf
, page 14, extract the revenue breakdown by region.โ
Next steps
Le Chat is a great way to analyze files and images via natural language, but you can go further with Canvas, our interactive document editor.
