What is Deep Research and how do I use it in le Chat?

Updated over a week ago

Deep Research lets le Chat run independent, multi-step research on the public web and synthesize findings with citations, similar to how a human researcher would proceed.

🔑 Powered by our most advanced model, Deep Research is designed to find, evaluate, and combine sources efficiently, turning hours of manual research into minutes.

How to use Deep Research

Deep Research is more than a web search. Start with a question, let the assistant propose a plan, refine it with your inputs, then generate a detailed report.

1. Activate Research mode and submit your query

In le Chat, toggle Research (1) below the message box, then enter your question (2) as you normally would.

🚨 When Research is on, tools like Libraries, Connectors, and Agents are disabled.

Turn on Research (1), then submit your query (2)

💡 You can start simple (for example, “Top holiday destinations this summer”) or ask for a deeper brief (for example, “Market trends for residential solar in Western Europe: key players, recent advances, and incentives”).

2. Review the plan and start the research

Le Chat will analyze your request and propose a research plan.

  • Click Edit (2) to adjust the plan, or reply in chat with changes.

  • Click Start (3) to begin.

🔑 The ⚡️ icon (1) in the screenshot shows when Deep Research is using Flash Answers. This feature lets it produce text much faster (over 1,000 tokens per second).

Review the plan with the Edit button (2), then click Start (3)

📌 le Chat may ask for clarifications before finalizing the plan. Answer in chat to continue.

3. Track progress while you keep chatting

Once started, the research runs as a background task. You can:

  • See progress at the top of the research widget.

  • Follow a live summary of searches and reasoning.

  • Keep using le Chat for other questions while the task runs.

  • Click Cancel to cancel the task (see Canceling a task 🔎).

🙋 Quick question: How do I know when the research is done?

While the task is running, the widget shows Researching... with a progress bar and live updates. When the task finishes, the status changes to Research complete and the final report appears.

4. Read, reuse, and export the report

When finished, the report appears directly in your conversation with a short summary at the top and citations throughout.

Next steps

Now that your report is ready, the next article shows you how to use it and export it.
